  1. just use the black dye. it's that simple...........

  2. Dylon do a washing machine dye that's very easy to use, Woolworth and Wilkinson sell it.  But if you have tried already it may be that what you are dying isn't cotton.  Some fabrics are not suitable to dye.  So check the fabric content of the garment and then the dye packet to make sure they are compatible.  If you don't want to use your washing machine, the cold water dyes need to be set, either with a commercial setting agent or with salt, again read the instructions thoroughly.

  3. I always used Rit dye and it worked pretty well - I'm not sure if it's still around by the same name, but if you go to a local fabric and craft store, they should have a wide selection.  Make sure you set the fabric in the dye long enough for it to absorb enough dye and then do your rinse somewhere easy to clean because black dye is a mess.

  4. it should be so simple with a black dye. going from grey to black on cotton shouldn't be a problem. Try a different brand of dye, maybe a hot water one, more effective than cold. good luck.

  5. A few pointers for you:

Check the material is 100% cotton - the label should say.

Different dyes suit different materials - the package should say.

If 100% cotton buy the box of dylon and machine wash the article with the dye at the recommended temp. plus add the recommended quantity of salt - see instructions.

Ensure you do not overload the machine or bundle up the material too tight.

Dry when cycle completed and iron.

    Best of luck.
