  1. A scanned image is simply a graphical representation of your page. Any graphics editor will allow you to modify the image. Some graphics editors are better than others for their particular application. For example, Acrobat would allow you to insert text fields all over the form and allow you to edit them with whatever text you'd like. Photoshop focuses mainly on graphical representations like pictures and allow you to manipulate the pixels of the scanned image.

Beware - manipulating and using official documents like bank statements and pay-stubs could be a fraudulent act with very serious consequences if you used the modified document (e.g. for a loan application or tax filing) for some purposes.

  2. A scanned document is useless as a means of backing up to replace the original in particular bank statements. It's useful to have a historical record for your own purposes but what's the point of editing the scanned document and presenting it as a copy of the original? I have got a 20 year history of all my records on pdf but I only maintain it for historical reasons and clearing up my filing cabinets. I have to keep 7 years of the original documents and also maybe copies of certificates in case the originals were lost and I had to retrieve them from the educational institutions. If you have Adobe Acrobat professional you can edit the documents but it would be pointless for the bank to accept that as valid documents. Any one could forge them as thus say that I had 2 hundred thousand in the account whereas it really reads as 2 thousand.

  3. why would you need to? tell me more. interesting.

  4. Ethically? Not at all.

  5. you cant

  6. after you scan a document, you basically have a picture of it

you will only be able to edit it as a picture with picture editing software

    UNLESS

you have a program which does OCR (optical charcater recognition)

this translates the text into characters/letters, which can be put into a normal word processing format (like 'word' or 'notepad') ONLY THEN will you be able to edit the text

  7. You need an OCR software which reads the scanned document and converts it into a word processing file which can then be edited.

This only works well if the text on the paper is clear and the scanner is fairly good quality too.
