How do i enter an a level exam?

I am planning on studying for a few a levels by distance learning and want to know how i enter for the exams. Also who the examintion body is for a levels.

There are several exam boards (inc. AQA, OCR, Edexcel etc). If you're studying through the Open University or someone similar they will arrange everything to do with the exams for you.
