  1. Everybody who dreams experiences sleep paralysis.  If we didn't, we'd be running all over the place in our sleep.

Ok, how to fall asleep fast.

Number 1, don't drink any caffeine after noon.

Number 2, don't eat for 4 hours before bedtime

Number 3, relax for an hour before you go to bed, ie, take the trash out after dinner, not at bedtime.

If those don't help, try progressive relaxation or one of Dr. Jeffrey Thompson's Delta Sleep CDs.

There is a really good book on lucid dreaming by Stephen Leberge.

If you want to get into the New Age thing, there are a few subliminal, hypnosis, and/or brain wave CDs out there too.  Frankly, having some guy tell me what to think while I'm asleep is just a little too creepy for me.

  2. i have narcolepsy and i'm here to tell you it's not fun at all. you don't want sleep paralysis, nor do you want more lucid dreams. Sleep paralysis is usually when you wake up anyway. The lucid dreams suck because if you have a dream in which you break your arm, you end up waking up with an arm that hurts like h**l because your brain really  believes your arm is broken for a while. Falling asleep fast will do nothing for you, what you want to do is enter REM sleep fast, which again is unhealthy and what narcoleptics deal with in daily life. Wanna hallucinate? try recriational drugs.

  3. SP isn't voluntary- it's a function of the autonomic nervous system, meant to spare you self-injury while asleep; also spares your bed-partner from your thrashing about during a dream.

Experiment with self-hypnosis and trance tapes.

  4. Sleep paralysis and lucid dreams are too different things. Sleep paralysis is very scary and you have no control over it. Lucid dreaming you do have control over. Go to http://www.dreamviews.com/ to learn about lucid dreaming. It's something you learn to do. Happy dreaming!
