How do i entertain 40 people besides drinking and eating ?

Its dads 60th birthday ! some entertainment ideas before meals and after meals would be fantastic.

Slideshows and family photos are boring; they don't engage very well except to family members.

Entertainment should be done after the meal. Before meal it should be casual; guests could line the gifts somewhere, take photos, socialize, help prepare meals, walk around, etc. A karaoke booth and boom box would be lively. Everybody could give the host a toast before the birthday cake.

Afterwards there's tea to go along with the cake. I go with silly break-the-ice games, where people can team up and compete. Teamwork is always light and fun. There was this game I remembered, where each team ties an eggplant such that it hangs between the legs. Then the player would use that as a stick to hit the "ball" (a round fruit or vegetable) to the finish line. It was hilarious..

you could put together a slideshow of pics of him and your family or put together a video of everybody telling you their favorite memory of him, and show it before or after the food. I would suggest after so that way people can sit down and eat and watch. you can even rent a photobooth for your party for pretty cheap. google it. set up some tables with checkers and chess and some decks of cards

Entertainers are expensive so do your own but delegate - pick someone to do something / split in to groups giving them all a packet of straws and cellotape - the team that bulids the highest tower wins a prize / do a fun stupid quiz including friends secrets / get everybody to make their own dessert.
