I'm not sure what kind of personality your mother has, so i'm not sure how you should tell her...i know my mom very well, so i tell her things like that when she's really listening, or when she's tired of listening to me talk about nonsense.

So, just try and tell her the best way you can when the house is quiet enough, and it's just you and her. Make it very clear to her what you did and try not to rush the words...
