  2. Train under any school that is a branch of a larger organization.  If they are a part of a worldwide organization, or a nationwide one, then they have a name and reputation to keep so at the very least the training standards will be good and the skills authentic.  Part of the reason Tae Kwan Do is the most popular martial art in the world, has to do with the fact that South Koreans have done more to keep it well organized, and to set similar standards for everyone.  Koreans dominate in the Olympics in the sport of course but that is because out of national pride they train in, and go above and beyond, the training standards were most people just meet the minimum requirements (which I hear is tough enough).  As a general rule, look for any school afiliated to an organization as big, or nearly as big, as the World Tae Kwan Do Federation.  Again if they operate under a larger umbrella, then they have a reputation to uphold.

In the "old days" of martial arts in China, every martial arts school had a policy similar to the "Gracie challenge" which by the way, is still out there, despite its proven effectiveness.  The challenge was open to anybody who thought they could defeat a given Kung Fu style.  The schools teaching authentic martial arts survived, while the ones that were obviously frauds did not.  Also, all matches did not have any rules, and sometimes people got killed.  It was China's rampant lawlessness and corruption which allowed that sort of thing to go on, and some school owners or "masters" were less than ethical.

Because such challenge matches are illegal, the only "proof" of a martial arts effectiveness is rooted two fold; the survival rate of students attacked on the streets, or places where there aren't any safety rules (as in a bar) AND sports competition.  Largely survival rate, and success in sports, are what give modern martial arts schools their reputation.  Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's success is rooted in that the Gracies have been successful in sports, sepecifically Vale Tudo (largely Helio's work), back when Vale Tudo was a brutal affair, and the fact that students in Brazil have all walked away, generally, in better shape than the rufians who assaulted them.

However we are not in Brazil, and, those challenge matches are illegal.  At the risk of sounding like a Libertarian, ultra conservative t**d, borrowing a line from south park "corporations are big and huge as they are from being the best."  While I do not agree with that sentiment, I will say that general line of thought applies to martial arts; the World Tae Kwan Do federation is huge, because its the best.  You won't find better TKD training anywhere, and even people who run independent schools trained there at some point.  In fact it has become a sort of unoficial "degree" requirement for any TKD person wishing to run a school.  This has ensured authenticity, high training standards and yes a high survival rate for students.  Don't do TKD by the way I just know a little about it.

Look for the organization, not the individual, or, at least an individual with a certificate from a larger organization.  It is the only way to confirm authenticity these days.

    good luck.

  3. go to classes try it most places have a free trial. ask lots of questions and then afterwards talk to the instructor ask them some question about how long and where they trained etc.
