  1. Look on yahoo with new york autistic school. I am sure there are some great schools considering it is New York. Also check around with other parents to see thier suggestions. Also tour the school before u sign up. Good luck!!!!

  2. Look for a mainstream school.  At least it's better than a special school.  It's a shame that there aren't that many inclusive schools in the world.  What a shock.  No wonder we have so many RUDE people here who can't accept people who are DIFFERENT!

  3. Contact the local chapter of the Autism Society of America (you can find a list on the ASA website - www.autism-society.org). Ask a local representative for a list of schools in the area, then contact the schools to set up times to visit. See if the schools have websites that you can check out ahead of time, to get an idea of the culture / focus of the schools. When you visit, get a tour of the school. Ask ahead of time if you can observe a classroom or two. This will give you an idea of how staff interact with students, and how students communicate.

Also, before you visit, consider what you're looking for in a school, and create a list of questions you want answered.

    For example:

    - Do you have a preferred teaching method / how does your child learn best? Some schools use very strict teaching programs, others are more eclectic.

    - Find out how the school deals with behaviors. Do they use a time-out room? Do they use physical restraint? Are staff trained using a nationally recognized physical intervention program? How often do they review it?

    - What kinds of supports do they have for parents/families?

    - What kinds of transition planning do they provide for students - prevocational / vocational / job skills?

    - What opportunities do they provide for students to interact with nondisabled ("neurotypical") peers?

You'll know after a visit whether a place "feels" right for you and your child. Good luck!

  4. RESEARCH! and before you send your child to the schools you find, request to sit in on a day at the school! You will see things you never imagined and it will ease your mind to know how your kid will be treated! GOOD LUCK!

  5. By looking on the Internet. Go to yahoo.com and type in the search box "A Good School for Autistic Children in New York City, New York."  And it should give you some suggestions to click on.

    Good Luck on finding it.

    Happy New Year.
