  1. -20

  2. 5a + 7 = 4a - 3

    -4a      = -4a     (subtract 4a from both sides)

    -----------------------

    a + 7   = -3      (result after subtracting from both sides)

    -7        = -7      (subtract 7 from both sides of result)

    ----------------------

    a         = -10    (result after subtracting from both sides of previous result)

  3. 5a - 4a = - 3 - 7

    a = - 10

  4. 5a + 7 = 4a -3

    5a -4a = -3 -7

    a = -10

  5. combine LIKE terms....

    5a - 4a = -3 - 7

    then...

    a = -10

    checking...

    substitute the value of (a) to the original equation...

    5(-10)+7=4(-10)-3

    -50+7=-40-3

    -43=-43

    check!
