How do i find information on my dad?

hello can anyone help please? i am trying to find any information my dad actually exsisted, my dad commited suicide when i was a baby, putting my mum in hospital(really long story) she won't talk about him, all i know is his name roger smithers. if anyone has any ideas of how i go about tracing him i would be very grateful!!

hey hey first of all i want to say good luck and i hope i can be of some help.if i am not mistaken you can go on to guines reunited . com type in your details then your dads and not only will you find out about yopur dad but you will find out about other people you are related to. good good good luck and i hope you find out something even if wat i did tell you doesn't work but it should.

If you know where you were living when he committed suicide, then there will be some reference to it in the newspaper of the time.I don't know where you would go because I don't know where you live. If in Britain then your library will help.

If you know when your parents were married, then you can look up  births,marriages,deaths on that web site. (BMD.)From there you can perhaps get a few clues.

I have found a possible death in the index in 1993 and a corresponding birth in 1937.

If this is correct, there are 5 people on genesreunited with a Roger Smithers born 1937.

If you are not registered with them, I can send a message for you.

The details I have found are

Birth Sep 1937 Surrey N E  2a 63  Mothers maiden name Hammond

If you would care to give your age and what area you lived in when these terrible things happened I am sure that some one can get you started in your search for information about  your dad. I see from your profile that you do not allow other yahoo users to email you,  it might be helpful if  you could possibly change that just whilst we try to get you the information. Remember your mum is still alive and well, and its unethical to give out any information about your mum on a live Internet forum,, that's why I asked you to change the email setting on your profile.

It helps if you have a date of birth, and place of birth. You could join Genes Reunited and search previous census' for information, but even better is first hand knowledge from extended family if your Mum doesn't want to talk about him. Good luck.

Hello Lindylou, Its just a thought, and this may help. Whenever there has been a suicide the Coroner is always called, and there is an inquest. You can apply to the Coroners court, as you are his daughter to see the findings of the inquest. That will give you loads of information about your Dad. I would suggest you call Portsmouth Coroners court to find out exactly what you have to do ao apply for a report.

Hi..really you need to know his date of birth / death and where he was born ....Or maybe family friends  might have some information, if you cannot talk to your mum. Once you have some information you can find quite a lot on the internet.
