How do i find out if damaged motorbike is stolen?

have found damaged moterbike it has no number plates. how do i find out if stolen and who owns it. don't say call police that obvious, would like to find out myself without them.

  1. You can't.  You can take the VIN to the DMV, but they won't give you any info.  If you take it to the police, it will get impounded where it will sit for all time.  Unless your state/city allows the property to be returned to you after a certain time.


  2. So you found it eh?

    It obviously belongs to someone, either the registered owner or the insurance company if it has been reported stolen and a settlement made.

    It ain't yours so do the right thing and tell the police.

Take the VIN number to the DMV  (it is stamped on the frame somewhere).  Tell them you have found the bike and want to contact the owner.  They will give you whatever information is publically available (sometime the address is not given out) and may be able to guide you into filing some kind of paperwork on it.

    Stick the VIN number in the search engine  given above. On bikes it's on the engine block.
