  1. The best way is to interview as many as possible to see who has the best to offer for your child.  Example-Healthy Snacks, Outings, How uptight or relaxed is the teacher etc.  Also a few surprise visits in early afternoon.  By then the kids have become their typical rowdy selves.  How harried does the teacher get when the kids are being typical kids.  You sure don't want yelling & hitting, you also don't want your child coming home with a disaster attitude that could only come from day care.  Take your time with this.  It's unbelievable how another teacher, parent or class mate can change your sweet little angel into a temper tantrum, swearing, biting little frustration.  All the best in picking the ultimate childcare!

  2. For the state of Ohio you can go online to http://www.odjfs.state.oh.us/cdc/query.a... and type in some info and find out how they did on inspections and if they are out of compliance.  Perhaps your state has something similar.  In a search engine type in the words "Daycare 'state name' liscensing and you should look for a page that is run by the state.    But please be aware that not all liscensing infractions are that serious.  I worked at a daycare and we would get in trouble for little issues like not having enough cots (we had 15 kids enrolled, 14 cots  all 15 kids were never there at the same time, if they were we'd borrow from another room) but this caused us to get written up.  Use your common sense and know that if a child was given the wrong meds or is left unattended at a center that would be a more serious violation.   Those things would be noted on the inspection forms.  Good luck to you!

  3. by other peoples word of mouth  and  by  your  surprise visits  to  the daycare

  4. Go with your gut instincts.  If it feels wrong, it probably is.

Check references, talk with other parents, the best thing to do is get referrals from other parents.  Ask a million questions.

  5. Agree on the daycare unexpected drop in.  That's a very good way to tell....

Talk to other parents, do a google search and see if anything strange or wierd comes up, post a question about it on Craigslist and see if anyone responds.

Most local communities have websites geared towards parents that offer up recommendations, suggestions on different centers and options within your town.
