  1. The easiest way I know about is to borrow a freeview box from someone and connect it to your TV.  If you can get the freeview channels on your TV, then you'll be able to get digital output on your TV.  If you need any further help, please feel free to ask me, and I'll try to help you.

  2. Let me rephrase your question.

"Will my TV need a converter box to receive digital broadcasts?"

Older TVs that do not have a digital tuner need a converter box between their antennas  and the TVs.

In the UK these are called "Freeview" boxes. In the US they are called "converter boxes", "ATSC tuners", or CECBs.

In the US, TVs marketed as "DTVs" and HDTVs" already have a digital tuner. Also you can look at the owner's manual or google the make & model of the TV to see if it has a digital tuner. In the US this will be an "ATSC tuner".

The most obvious tip off that a TV has a digital tuner is to go into the TV's menu. If you can scan for digital channels, then it has a digital tuner.
