  1. Then ask him.

    We don't know.

  2. You ask him.

  3. Duffman gave you the correct answer.  You can file a third party claim against your landlord.  You do not have to file suit.  However, you do need to prove that he was negligent.  You will need the source and origin report from the fire department.

If you cannot prove he was negligent, his homeowner's coverage will not cover you for your personal property.

  4. You cannot find out.  Further, a third party cannot file a claim with the insurer - only the policyholder can.  His insurance would not cover tenants' property anyway.  If you're claiming a loss through negligence, you'll have to sue.

  5. You Can't. Additionally you should know that a third party cannot go for the claim with the insurer. Only a policyholder can claim the amount.

  6. If you're looking to get reimbursed for your damaged property, then you'll have to file a claim under your renter's insurance.  The Rental Dwelling Policy that your landlord would have as insurance will not cover the tenants property.

If there's evidence that your landlord's tampering with the water heater caused the fire, then you may be able to file a liability claim with his insurance company, but you will need evidence.  Was there a fire incident report that specified the cause of the fire?  If I were you, I would contact your local fire department and try to get a copy of the report.

As far as finding out who insures the property, you'll probably just have to ask your landlord.

I hope you have renter's insurance, and if not I wish you the best of luck, it won't be easy to be reimbursed.
