  1. ask them.  Coward.  Are we that affraid to offend people that we can't do this?  I hate this country

  2. two suggestions...

One, use the right terminology, as to what you want to learn. Nationality is where a person is a citizen of.  For example, persons in the US may have heritage of being from Mexico, Germany, Chinese.. or fill in the blank.  If they all are citizens of the US, their nationality is the same.

You may be wondering about the ethnic background of someone, or racial.  Those are NOT nationalities, and often, they are not what they appear.  If they have not researched their own ancestry or background, they may not even be sure themselves!!

With no intent to be rude.. the answer is that you can only find that out from that person.  Meaning, you would have to ask them. It cannot be determined from appearance.

    edit-

census records are only open up to 1930, for privacy reasons.  Unless the person was born prior to that, you cannot use that for finding info.

  3. Yes, ask, or you can try to track him/her through census records that include place of birth.

Hint: anyone born in the United States or to parents who were United States citizens or who has been naturalized is American.
