  1. Historically, most Lowland Scots didn't belong to clans whereas many Highland Scots did.  For example, the poet Robert Louis Stevenson was most definitely a Scot, but the Stephenson family wasn't part of a clan.  Indeed, even the suggestion that a Lowland Scot came from the Highlands would have been considered an insult before the mid-Victorian era when Sir Walter Scott romanticized the Highlands.

However, since Lanarkshire is comparatively near the Hebrides and the Highlands, if you're a native of Glasgow, you may have some Highland ancestors.  Even if the Clyde surname doesn't indicate Highland ancestry, perhaps the name of one of your grandmothers or great grandmothers does, so you would be eligible to join her clan.  Go to the library and see if you can find Robert Bain's The Clans and Tartans of Scotland (Glasgow: Fontana, 1981).  Bain goes into the subject in great detail.

  2. Maybe you should consider using the word family tree or ancestors

  3. http://www.scotclans.com/

There's a great search engine for this question on this site.

I tried your name, but nothing came up. Go back a few ancestors and keep them male as it's their clan you'll belong to. Good luck.

  4. I hate to point out the obvious, but if you do not know what clan you belong to, you don't belong to one!

Now, if you asked what clan your ancestors belonged to, that would be a different matter.  I would then suggest that you do some research.

    Try these:

You should start by asking all your living relatives about family history.  Then, armed with that information, you can go to your public library and check to see if it has a genealogy department.  Most do nowadays; also, don't forget to check at community colleges, universities, etc.  Our public library has both www.ancestry.com and www.heritagequest.com free for anyone to use (no library card required).

Another place to check out is any of the Mormon's Family History Centers.  They allow people to search for their family history (and, NO, they don't try to convert you).

A third option is one of the following websites:

    http://www.searchforancestors.com/...

    http://www.censusrecords.net/?o_xid=2739...

    http://www.usgenweb.com/

    http://www.census.gov/

    http://www.rootsweb.com/

    http://www.ukgenweb.com/

    http://www.archives.gov/

    http://www.familysearch.org/

    http://www.accessgenealogy.com/...

    http://www.cyndislist.com/

    http://www.geni.com/

Cyndi's has the most links to genealogy websites, whether ship's passenger lists, ancestors from Africa, ancestors from the Philippines, where ever and whatever.

Of course, you may be successful by googling: "john doe, born 1620, plimouth, massachusetts" as an example.

    Good luck and have fun!

Check out this article on five great free genealogy websites:

Then there is the DNA test; if you decide you want to REALLY know where your ancestors came from opt for the DNA test. Besides all the mistakes that officials commonly make, from 10% to 20% of birth certificates list the father wrong; that is, mama was doing the hanky-panky and someone else was the REAL father. That won't show up on the internet or in books; it WILL show up in DNA.

I used www.familytreedna.com which works with the National Geographics Genotype Program.

  5. The only reference I can find to 'Clyde' is the following, and his family name was MacLiver, not Clyde.Sorry ! There does not appear to be a clan, or sept, Clyde.

CLYDE, Baron of the United Kingdom,  (Colin Macliver or M'Liver).1858–1863

a title conferred in 1858 on General Sir Colin Campbell (Title now extinct).

  6. Not every Scotsman belongs to a Clan.

  7. The Clydes of Scotland don't belong to a clan, although they do have a Tartan, lol.
