  1. If the vehicle is completely paid for go to the bank who financed it and ask them why there is still a lein on it. Take your papers with you proving you paid it off. If they forgot to take the lein off, tell them to do it!

If you haven't paid it off, the bank will keep a lein on it until it's paid off.

Have you had repairs done at a garage and forgotten to pay the bill?

Have you gotten a divorce or gone through bankruptcy? Those are other reasons for a lein.  Go to your local license branch and ask who holds the lein. It's your vehicle, they have to give you the information.

In my state the BMV has a website and you can see the information on all vehicles titled under your name for the past 7 years. Check and see if your state has one too.

If none of this works, check your credit report. There could be something on there you don't know about.

    Good luck.

  2. go to the department of motor vehicles, or a tag agency.  supply a title, or registration, and driver's license, and they should have you fill out and sign a form to obtain a copy.  In oklahoma, it costs like 2 bucks to get this.

It could be that the previous lein holder's debt was satisfied, but they never released the lien.  Just contact them when you find out who they are.
