If the e-mail address that you want to check is a Yahoo e-mail address go to the Yahoo homepage and click on the yellow box that says "More Yahoo Services" and then go to the section that says, "Communication" and click on Member directory.  You will then be able to type in the name of the person or the Yahoo ID (if you know it) to see if they are listed in the Member Directory.

For other addresses you can go to a site like whitepages.com and type in the name of the person and then click the box to include a search for e-mail addresses.
