Try looking at the website below, I can't guarantee it will be on there but it's a very useful site for alternatives to 0844.  Quite often line rental packages include free calls to other lanlines, 0844 0845 0870 numbers aren't always included so the site is a great resource for finding the 'real' number.

do you have dial up Internet 0844 is normally an Internet dial up number, or if you have broadband it could be that your computer is dialling the number contact your service provider

The www.anywho.com charges for the information.   Google and a few other major search engines may be your best bet.

If you're 5 minutes late on a credit card, that may be where it's coming from.     If you're in the U.S. they're doing those automated recordings for president.

That's a non-geographic number, if that's of any help at all.  Like already said, try googling the entire number - you might find it comes up.
