  1. Get yourself a good test kit such as  the Taylor K 2006. Stay away from strips. It will save you money in the long run. First, check your filter and see if it is dirty. If so hose it off. Then you need to keep your water at shock level until it clears. This will involve shocking in the morning and at night. Check your filter daily.

  2. if you put some of the water in a bowl with a lid and take it to your local pool place they will test your water for you for free. they will tell you exactly what you need and how to add it. they will also show your how to do it yourself to

  3. You need to figure your pools volume.  Width and depth or check the makers instructions and look for gallons of water.

A test kit for pH and Chlorine is always good to have.

Normal Chlorine levels are 1-3ppm with 5ppm max.  Most people do not put enough chlorine in their pools to do the job. Conditioner, Stabilizer or Cyanuric Acid are all the same and they will protect the chlorine in the pool, any chlorine.  Accepted levels are 30-50ppm.

Normal pH is 7.6 for pools but that is sometimes hard to maintain because the chlorine you add is either acidic or base and will push or pull the pH depending on how much you use.

You mention shocking the pool.  Did you use calcium hypochlorite?  Bagged shock is very high in calcium and by itself can cause clouding.  Best to avoid it.  Liquid pool chlorine does the same thing in quantity and can be used to maintain the residual chlorine 1-3 ppm, mixes with water and can be installed in small doses your pool likely requires.

    You're welcome!!

  4. In the summer time you need to add about a gallon or so of chlorine to the pool everyday, and you should have about three chlorine tablets in the floaty thing, in at all times. most of the time you can just tell by looking at the water. It should be super clear. Stick your hand in the water and (this might sound weird) if it feels kinda dense the ph balance is off and you need more chlorine. The water should feel soft and relaxing.
