I've just moved into a new property, and we are looking to paint over the existing wallpaper because the walls are slightly uneven (so the wallpaper gives a nice smooth finish)

The majority of the wallpaper is stick down very nicely, but a few small areas are peeling away from the wall.

How can I get this to stick back down smoothly?

Thanks guys!

P.s Please no suggestions for stripping all the wallpaper, and then reapplying new paper :)

  1. You just buy joint compound for walls- and slap it on any peeling or loose areas.  And any bad seams that might show through the paint!  Sand it down.  Then prime your whole wall with that wallpaper paint over primer stuff.  Then paint with the color you want.

I will tell you if the wall paper is very old and you paint it with primer- the wallpaper may start to peel off the wall.  If this happens- stop what your doing- let it dry and then you will have to remove all the wallpaper before painting.  Also paintable wallpaper is different then regular wallpaper which is why you have to prime it first.  If you had to redo it- buy paintable wallpaper found at any painting store.

You also might want to think about wallpapering over the old wallpaper- I found that to be easier and look better.

Same deal- prime the walls with sizing and then apply the wall paper.

It's hard to hide the seams in wallpaper when you paint over it.

  2. I would not suggest re-gluing those sections. While it may hold, if you paint over it and then it begins to peel again (environmental conditions like humidity levels can affect it's bond), not only will it look bad, but you'll have the additional pain in the butt of having to repaint the entire wall to avoid lapp marks/ achieve a uniform look.

If you want an easy, fast and durable repair, here's what I would suggest.

Trim off the peeling section with a sharp blade back to the area where it is firmly attached. Then, skim coat the area with sheetrock mud (or joint compound). Make it just thick enough to fill in the missing spot and blend it over the edges by several inches. Allow it to dry thoroughly, then LIGHTLY sand the area to level it. Make sure you remove the dust before you prime the wall for good adhesion, then paint away!

    Good luck!

  3. Go to a DIY shop and in the wallpaper section where you find conventional wallpaper paste you'll find tubes of wallpaper repair adhesive.

I once used it when wallpaper started coming away close to a ceiling, and it worked well.

  4. Quick and dirty way is to get an aerosol can, 3M Contact Cement and hit both parts, wait 5 Min's and adhere. Carefully mask off exposed surfaces.

  5. clean the wall underneath, apply glue and press wallpaper to it.

  6. I would say the same as others have..Border adhesive.

    It works well for me.

  7. Get a tube of border adhesive, it's stronger than paste

  8. Any time that I've ever tried to paint over wallpaper, the paint loosened it.  You may be better off renting a steamer to remove it.
