  1. Step #1 Throw VCR in the trash

Step #2 Go out & buy DVD player

Step #3 Catch up with the times, This is the 21st century

**ADD** Not trying to be hurtfull, You can buy a new VCR at Wal-Mart for about $20 or so. It will cheaper to buy a new one instead of just trying to keep repairing an old one.

  2. Assuming you intend to continue with VHS for a while and don't just want a quick fix, the answer is perhaps to buy a USED VCR from a NAME brand, such as Panasonic or JVC. A mid- or high-end model from the mid-1990s is likely to suit you best, and because it's obsolete technology it shouldn't cost you more than pennies.

VCRs manufactured since the DVD era are generally awful (built down to a price). Cheap and non-known-brand VCRs from ANY era are also awful. Ancient VCRs (15 years old, or older) are likely to be worn out or require extensive work done to them.

If your existing VCR falls into any of these categories it is absolutely NOT worth throwing more money at it, and even if it doesn't, chances are it has some irretractable problem that can't be fixed.

Frankly I would throw away ANY VCR where there was even a remote chance it would eat my tapes, because used VCRs are ten a penny whereas my tapes are irreplaceable.

  3. take the top off of the vcr, there will be three things to clean. with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. make sure you clean the big round silver thing. you cant miss it. once you clean that there will be two black sencers, one on the left and one on the right. make sure you clean them often. every time you put a movie that has not been played in awile, open the lid of the tape and blow in to it two to three times. then place in to the vcr. this will help cut down on cleaning the heads. repeat steps if needed.

  4. strange as it sounds your tires are dirty inside the unit visible though the door are round rubber parts called tires you will also see some slightly leaning metal upright post ..with the unit unplugged using rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip wipe these perts down. allow it a few minutes to dry before plugging it back in
