  1. I also have Windows XP.  Have you tried changing your "Screen Resolution" in "Display Properties", "Settings" Tab?

    Edit:

Sorry, I didn't have time before to include this in my answer.  When you said you used Paint to edit your photos, I assume that you mean MS Paint that comes with all Windows operating systems.  If changing your screen resolution does not work or you do not want to change your screen resolution, I recommend downloading and installing one of the following two image editing software programs - both programs are free and CNet Download.com is a safe and spyware-free site.

I use FastStone Image Viewer 3.5 for image editing and it is excellent.  Here is the Publisher's Description:

"FastStone Image Viewer is a fast, stable, user-friendly image browser, converter and editor. It has a nice array of features that include image viewing, management, comparison, red-eye removal, emailing, resizing, cropping and color adjustments. Its innovative but intuitive full-screen mode provides quick access to EXIF information, thumbnail browser and major functionalities via hidden toolbars that pop up when your mouse touch the four edges of the screen. Other features include a high quality magnifier and a musical slideshow with 150+ transitional effects, as well as lossless JPEG transitions, drop shadow effects, image annotation, scanner support, histogram and much more. It supports all major graphic formats including BMP, JPEG, JPEG 2000, GIF, PNG, PCX, TIFF, WMF, ICO and TGA.

Version 3.5 added 'Side by Side' comparison in 'Enhance Colors'; added 'Line Highlighter' in 'Draw Board'; enhanced 'Text' tool in 'Draw Board'."

Another good product is Paint.NET 3.35.  I haven't used it myself, but have heard that it is very good.  Here is the Publisher's Description:

"Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plug-ins. Version 3.35 has a new Posterize adjustment, Intersect selection mode, dramatically faster selection editing performance (add, subtract, intersect), and some small miscellaneous bug fixes."
