How do i fix up my path environment variable in command prompt?

every time I open a new command prompt window, the path goes back to the defaule, ignoring everything I hava added to the path. I use windows xp home edition

are you logging in using an account with admin rights to be able to make the change permanent, also are you on a corporate network which is controlled by group policies,
