How do i free up space on my start up disk?

Question

i JUST bought the 80GB smart disk, my FIRST ONE EVER. so forgive me if the answer to my question is very obvious. i moved my whole itunes library to the external hard drive and i STILL don't have enough space on my start up disk (btw, is that synonymous with my internal hard drive?) to update my software. WHY?????
