  1. You need to file an IRS Form SS-4

This link will take you to it

  2. You can apply online or you can call the IRS at 18008291040 and ask them to mail you a SS-4 form.  That is the form you need to complete to get a Tax Payer Identification Number with the IRS.  Also you have to get tax payer identification numbers with the State too so don't forget to contact them as well.  You would call the State Department of Taxation in Illinois.  Also, if you have an Unemployment Commission you need to register with them as well.

  3. apply on line at  www.irs.gov

    it is an EIN#

  4. You can call the IRS 1(800) 829-1040 and get connected to the business department. They will ask you the name and business structure of your business. They will give you a TIN (tax identification number) EIN (employer identification number) right over the telephone.

There are hundreds of websites that do it for you.  It is totally something you can do on your own, but if you mess it up, it will take months upon months to get it fixed.  The websites I've found charge anywhere from $9.00 to $100.00.  I got referred to this one because they actually look at it by person before they file, and it's not just an automated system
