How do i get a government grant for my utility bills

my electric company switched my service and they added $1,700 to my bill as a delivery charge and they expect payment, but i cant afford it. i heard there were government grants or programs other than welfare that would help me out, but the search engines dont seem to be much help.

  1. Go to your local Department of Human services office and see if they can help.  Sometimes they provide assistance during times of the year when bills are high, but you have to be low income and in need.  Personally, this sounds like a mistake on the part of the electric company.  You might want to check to make sure.  


  2. That doesn't sound right!  Why so much?  I would talk to the company first to see why it is so high.  You may have to contact better business bureau or at least threaten them that you will.  I just don't see how they expect anyone to pay for that.

    In the mean time so they don't shut you off, call 2-1-1 (from a land line) and ask where you can find utility assistance.

  4. Yes there is.  In New York its called HEAP grant.  No, you dont need to be on welfare to apply.  The amount of the grant depends on your income.
