Apply, I know this sounds simplistic but that is the first step and dont limit yourself to one railroad, apply for every company you can find.

Be persistant, most railroaders you talk to had to apply more than once.

If you get called into an interview, one of the most important things they will want to know is are you willing to work nights, weekends and holidays?

If you are not, the interview is over, also you need ot tell them you are willing to relocate if they ask.

YOu need to be absolutely drug free as they will do screening before they hire and periodically throughout your career so plan on staying that way.

You cannot be color bllind, glasses are ok if your vision is correctable to 20/20,
