if it's scuba diving then go to a certified dive centre and sign up to do a PADI open water course. It will take four days. two days in a classroom and swimming pool learning from books and practicing skills. the last two days on a boat and diving at a proper dive site. You will have to complete a test on the second day and before you start you have to fill in a form. you have to be reasonably healthy and CANNOT have a cold at the time. It's pretty expensive but really fun...=]

For scuba diving, you need a certification class.  PADI and NAUI both have online searches to locate a shop near you for the class.

Both classes are along these lines:

A distance swim, around 200 yards.

A timed tread, around 10 minutes.

Classroom learning

pool skills

open water skills.
