  1. Call the Department of Motor Vehicles, give them the tag numbers and vin number and ask who the registered owner is.  Then ask them what you to take possession, if that is not possible, you can ask the police to have it towed away.

  2. >>  or take possession of it

Sorry.  It doesn't work that way. It would be too easy for somebody to steal a car and then claim it - saying it was left on my property for a long time.

You have to contact your local police dept and they will tell you what are the steps.  Just be warned, you will have to PAY to have it removed (you cannot keep it).

If you find the owner, you can sue them for storage charges, then take possession in lieu of payment.

    Good Luck...

P.S.  A simple solution is to "somehow" get the car moved to public street / hwy.  Then the local police would eventually consider it abandoned and they will take care of it (remember to remove the plate so it will be classified as abandoned).

  3. You might be able to get a defective title bond because you do not have the title.    Or call your DMV office or police department.

  4. Well, 30 days does not an abandoned car make, here in Houston.

First, you have to report it to HPD.  They'll come, probably grab the car, run the vin, and see if it's stolen or there's a lein on it.  If it's not stolen, there's no lein, and it's not been attached to a crime, then you have to wait 60 days, pay fees to get it out of impound, and go to the DMV to get a title bond form.  Meanwhile, the DMV is going to try to contact the owner.

Then, you buy  a title bond, and wait.  Pay another fee, then you can title the car to you.

All in all, it can take six months, and will cost hundreds of dollars, depending on what kind of car it is.

But most likely, it's either stolen, or there's a lein on it.

  5. Call the police and report it abandoned on your property. You "will" be asked if you know who owns it and why it is on your property. It can then be towed. You cannot assume ownership in this way.
