  1. The UK Police all use digital radios nowadays, so listening into their conversations is almost impossible. Their frequencies also 'hop' as do the Military.

  2. I can get them on one of mine and every so often somebody says "someone is listening in".

    Shortwave, ordinary old radio (mine).

  3. yes there called scanners...but there illigal.

i can recall years ago you could find them just past 100 mhz on the fm radio band, but its all changed now.

  4. It's illegal but you'd probably need a short wave radio. Not that I'd know of course.. but I've heard things in the pub.

  5. All the uk police forces now use Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA)  to communicate, soon the army, ambulance, fire service will too, This is for security reasons and the data protection act.

you cannot buy any tetra receiver for personal use any where in the uk.

  6. The cheapest way is to get an airband radio, which can be also used to monitor frequencies used my taxis and maritime vessels as well as air traffic control.

Most emergency services will be moving over to digital radio, which will require much more complex and expensive equipment.
