I have a cotton shirt that has a grease stain on it. I didn't notice it until I had already washed and dried the shirt. Now, it has been set in for quite some time since I was going to give up on it, but decided to try again. I really like this shirt (I got it when I was on vacation so i can't just go buy another one). Any ideas on how to get it out?

  1. My daughter wore a brand new shirt to a party and got greasy food all over it.  I didn't realize it stained until it was washed and dried.  It was a solid color cottony spandex shirt and the grease was everywhere.  I could not get the stain out but try to modify it.  Once the stain is set you are pretty much screwed but take butter (or an oily substance) and rub it in other places and put a mild bleach solution in a squirt bottle and spray in other areas.  It's like a cooler tie dyed effect and if it doesn't turn out how you want then toss it--it's a loss anyway.

But if you do get a grease stain that is fresh I've heard that milk gets them out.  Something about it having like properties.

  2. you can try this, it worked for me with a 20 year old salad dressing stain on linen.

fill the sink with the hottest water the shirt can take.  Put 1/4 cup of OxyClean in the water.  When the OxyClean has dissolved, put the shirt in it and soak overnight - at least 12 hours.  Wash normally.  Check to see if the grease has come out.  If it has but not all the way, do it again.  Then dry normally.

  3. Depends on if it is white or colored shirt.  If white, use clorox bleach pen on the stain, and use baking soda in the wash.  If colored shirt use baking soda in the wash with Pine Sol (the blue kind-it just smells clean), and wash the shirt alone in the wash.  This will get out gasoline spills also.

  4. Lift as much grease as with cloth or sponge, then gently rub the area with baking soda – leave overnight then wash in your usual manner.

  5. My husband is a mechanic and always comes home with grease stains. I usually treat them before they get washed, but there was one that I didn't. I sprayed it with Spray n' Wash and let it sit for 10 min....I also sprayed some grease lightening on it and it worked. Hope this helps...good luck.
