  1. The best thing is to go to a college who provide training for trades and they have links with employers, alternatively write to plumbers and electricians in your local yellow pages or directory

  2. Myself, I went to job corps to take their pre-apprenticeship in electrical. I went into the army instead of going into an apprenticeship, but I applied before I left. Whether union or non-union, there usually is somewhere that a person can apply. They then will rank you according to what you include (letters of recommendation, veteran status, etc.) and put you on a waiting list accordingly. When your are called up they match you to whom they say you will work for.

This may not be true of all apprenticeships, but it was how I did it while I was in Oregon. I do know that Oregon requires a year of algebra to become an electrician.

Since you are 20, you do meet the age eligibility for job corps. You can get hands on training in pre-apprenticeships through them. Although I wouldn't suggest that option unless you need your diploma or a year of algebra or something. It's a good program, if you don't mind strict rules that can get annoying sometimes.
