  1. This is probably something to do with your soundcard drivers.

First go to the Tower manufacturers website (Eg: HP, Compaq, Dell, etc.), and under a Support link follow the necessary steps (which are layed out at this stage) to find the audio driver for your machine model.

If after the installation the audio still doesn't work, attempt to plug in a microphone in the right port of your tower, go into your sound settings and try to turn the volume all the way up on the Microphone.

Now go into the Sound Recorder (Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder) and attempt to record some sound whilst making noise near the microphone, or simply blowing into it. You should see on the application you just opened, while you are recording, whether it's picking up any sound or not.

If it doesn't pick up anything, then your I/O board could have gone wonky. It's very hard to repair an I/O board, and even by a professional it's very dodgy.

If the I/O board is the problem, it's best to replace your motherboard. It's a very simple procedure if you're careful enough, and you don't have to buy a whole new computer that'd cost you quite a bit (you can keep everything else).

Just make sure you get the right motherboard for your Processor.

Also, you 'may' need to repair Windows through an installation disc if you're changing your motherboard. Each Windows installation is set to the hardware specification it's installed on.

  2. Do you have a little speaker icon on your taskbar at the bottom right of  your desktop?

Did you ensure that you plugged your speakers into the audio-out instead of the  audio-in or mic ?

Did you check to be sure that your audio drivers are updated?

Did you check the status of your audio drivers under the Device Manager?

Check all this and see if there are any problems.

Then we can go from there.
