  1. If your mother was a citizen of the UK at the time of your birth, you had dual nationality as a child.  Unless your mother got you a UK passport or did something to protect your rights to citizenship there through her, you may well have lost any rights to UK citizenship in adulthood being moved to the US, etc.  Take your birth certificate with your mother's citizenship recorded on it plus all additional proof of your mother's UK citizenship to the nearest UK consulate and ask.

If your mother was not a UK citizen at the time of your birth, you have no rights to UK citizenship and never did.

  2. If your mother was British it sounds like you already have dual citizenship.

If you were born in the United Kingdom before 1 January 1983

If you were born in the United Kingdom before 1 January 1983, you are almost certainly a British citizen. The only exception is if you were born to certain diplomatic staff of foreign missions who had diplomatic immunity.

If you were born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January 1983

If you were born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January 1983, you are a British citizen if at the time of your birth one of your parents was:

    a British citizen; or

legally settled in the United Kingdom.

  3. you should have it automactically, try going to the embassy and asking they'll help you out
