  2. Rita - the news isn't good.

There is a common misconception that a student can easily gain residency in a new state, so that they can attend college and pay in-state tuition fees. That's not true.

States provide a break on in-state tuition as a "reward" to the taxpayers who subsidize the state education system. As a Florida taxpayer, part of my property tax money goes to support all of the state universities and colleges in Florida - this keeps the cost of education down - because if it wasn't for tax dollars, the schools would need to raise a lot more through tuition.

If an applicant from another state moves here, without ever having paid state taxes, and easily qualifies for in-state tuition, that's not fair to those of us who have paid taxes for years and years. Because of that, almost all states make it quite difficult to obtain residency for tuition purposes.

You can not have moved to the state specifically for educational purposes. You must be financially independent of your parents. You must be gainfully employed for a least one year, and pay taxes. These are the only ways to gain state residency for tuition purposes.

The decision to attend an out-of-state public university is a very expensive choice. You will not be able to find special financial assistance to help you afford that optional preference. You will also not be able to attend school for a year or two as an out-of-state student and then magically gain "residency".

As I said, this is a very common misconception that trips up a lot of students. If someone answers this question and tells you to register to vote and get a driver's license and then you'll be a resident, they don't know what they're talking about.
