How do i get from Leeds to Whitby by rail?

Whitby is quite awkward to get to by rail from places south of Middlesborough, its best to use a combination of bus and train (or bus all the way!)

Yorkshire Coastliner do a bus from Leeds bus station to Whitby

Its the 840 and there are IIRC 4 journeys per day and it takes about 3 hours (compareable to the train as the bus can take a more direct route over the moors)

Another Option is to get the train to Scarborough and the Arriva 93 to Whitby which runs hourly from outside Scarborough Station

Just one railway mainline into Whitby remains, compared with four in its heyday. Northern Rail run four trains daily from Middlesbrough, taking a leisurely hour and a half for the journey along the pretty Esk Valley. North York Moors railway operate picturesque services to and from Whitby and the North York Moors, serving Grosmont, Goathland, Newtondale, Levisham, and Pickering.

If you're coming from York or anywhere further south, it's quicker to use the Coastliner bus (see below) from York - through tickets are available from any station in the country, ask for "Whitby Bus Station".

It has to be said that the bus is your best bet, even if you start by getting the train to York and changing there - simply because the train to Whitby is so infrequent and goes a long way round (thanks a bunch, Dr Beeching). Go to www.traveline.org.uk and use journey planner to show all your options. Bus or train are both a nice ride!

The question said Leeds to Whitby by Rail... Thus, Leeds - York - Middlesboro' - Whitby. I just hope that since I did the M'boro to Whitby trip they've put some real curved track down - when I used to use it, all "curves" consisted of short straight sections joined together giving a rough ride to say the least!

if you go to nationa rail enquiries, and put in your station and your destination station, it will come up with several alternatives for times and also tell you the ticket prices.

Start by buying a ticket.

Then get on a train.Make sure the train is going EAST.

Get off at Middlesborough.

Get on a train going to Whitby.

Get off AT Whitby.
