Call your lender or visit its website. Ask for forms to file a deferment for "economic hardship." You must show evidence of your income, expenses and medical condition.

Depending on the type of loans you have and through what lender, you may have options for forbearance, which temporarily postpones payments.

You should contact your lender directly for what can be done in your specific case.

If your loans are federal loans, you can request to have them discharged (so you don't have to pay them back).  Here is the form to be sent to your lender.

If your loans are private loans, you and your cosigner will likely still be required to pay the loans back.  (Which is why private loans are evil.)  Also if you die, your cosigner will be required to pay back your student loan.
