  1. You can do a degree in zoology at university.  The main subject you need is biology I think but check specific university websites to see which subjects you need to take at school.  (Assuming you're still at school).

  2. What is it you want to do as a zoologist? Zookeeper, research, conservation, etc? There are other degrees that can get you a job working with or studying animals.

    some are:

    Zoology, Mammalogy

    Animal Science

    Ethology/Animal Behavior

    Psychology/Animal Psychology

Wildlife/Exotic/Zoo (biology, care, ecology, conservation, education, etc)

    Zoo Science/Technology

    Animal/Exotic/Wildlife Management and/or Training

However, to become a zoologist you need to get a degree in zoology. It would also be a good idea to start gaining some experience with animals and/or experience related to zoology.

    Education/Training

Students planning careers as field biologists need strong mathematical skills and should like working with computers. Perseverance, curiosity and the ability to concentrate on details and work independently are essential.

In addition to basic biological knowledge, interested students should seek opportunities to demonstrate they can work well with a wide variety of people. Good oral and written communication skills are critical, as many scientists work as part of a team, write research papers or proposals and have contact with clients or customers with nonscience backgrounds.

Experience through internships, undergraduate research or co-op programs is valued highly by employers and graduate schools.

Although there are career opportunities for zoologists with only a bachelor’s degree, many professional field biologists hold either a master’s degree or a Ph.D. For this reason, individuals interested in careers in zoology should give careful consideration to graduate study and should research the different jobs available at the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. levels as part of choosing a major of study.

About 25% of recent MSU zoology graduates went on to graduate or professional school, 30% work in a science field, and the remaining 55% work in fields not directly related to field biology.

The training that is required is you need a Bachelor's degree. It is a minimum for entry into zoology. Post graduate study is usually required for research or teaching courses. Basic and applied sciences, biochemistry, math, research methods and lab techniques, anatomy, zoology, and biology are the courses you need to take.

The qualifications for this job are a liking for working with animals and birds, strong scientific curiosity, ability to communicate verbally, writing skills, ability to work independently and as a team member, patience to make observation of animals, and good manual dexterity and powers of inference.

    Step1

Volunteer during high school at facilities such as ranches and veterinary clinics, where you can gain firsthand experience caring for animals.

    Step2

Maintain high grades in high school, especially in science classes.

    Step3

Ask your high school guidance counselor for a list of colleges that offer a bachelor's degree in zoology or in biological science with a concentration in zoology. Realize that a bachelor's degree is only the first step in this field.

    Step4

Send for college catalogs before your senior year. Make certain you meet the admissions requirements, and be sure to apply well before the deadline date.

    Step5

During your college years, gain practical experience at a local zoo by volunteering or through an internship or part-time job. You'll make invaluable contacts through this work.

    Step6

Be prepared to get a master's or doctoral degree if you want to advance to the position of curator or if you want to do any research work. Include business courses in your electives, even as an undergraduate.

What are some other ways to gain animal experience?

Some places to look for volunteer jobs or internships might be:

    • Veterinary offices

    • Animal training classes (does your dog need obedience training?)

    • Local Humane Society

    • Local Park Service

    • Wildlife rehabilitation centers (like for wolves, bears, big cats, birds of prey, and even bats)

    • Animal shelters

    • Farms (for domestic animals, or even ostrich, llama, or butterfly farms)

    • Pet breeders (those that breed specific kinds of dogs, cats, or horses)

    • Horse stables and boarding facilities

    • 4-H Clubs

  3. you have to go to a collage.
