  1. First off, I have to say how eerie your situation is!  I was 24 months when my biological mother left me at some people home, saying she was going to go job hunting and came back 3 years later.  These people didn't know that I had a twin sister until my bio mother came back.  Of course she left again and took my twin sister.  I was molested and abused in the home and left when I was 15 years old.  Ok, anywho

Find out which court you were adopted in, try going to the courthouse in the town they lived when you were adopted, start asking about your papers.

It's always possible that your papers are sealed.  As far as that goes, I'm not sure how to get by that, I know that you have to go to court to get them unsealed.  (I've never wanted mine, I know my biological mother unfortuneatly)

I wish you the best of luck, and I hope when you find your biological mother that she is a wonderful loving person who was just going through a hard time.  (if thats what you want of course)

    :)

  3. I am not sure about 18 years ago, but 3 years ago when I adopted my son, we had to file all the adoption paperwork with the county court where we lived.  So you may want to find out where you lived when you were adopted and start with that county courthouse.

  4. List your information with International Soundex Reunion Registry. It is free. http://www.isrr.net/

Also go to www.forums.adoption.com and register there which is also free and has a ton of ideas of how to go about searching and how to track down paperwork.

  5. The truth is that it depends on the state in which your adoption took place.  Not all states require a court order, though a great number do.

Here a URL that will give you information about what you can get from which states.
