How do i get my Xbox live IP adress to work?

I have no idea about stuff like routers and gateways so don't tell me stuff i don't understand please. I plug the ethernet into my xbox and into my computer (like my modem) not the router thing. It says the adapter is hooked up but my IP adress fails i even tried a manual adress it didn't work. I also tried changing my computer's security in the internet options, nothing.

PLEASE HELP!

  1. You need to plug both the computer and the Xbox into the Router..

    If you do not have enough ports on the router you can either switch cables back and forth or buy a Switch or Hub which you would connect to the router and then plug both the computer and the Xbox into..
