How do i get my carburetor off of my 70 Mercury outboard?

i replaced my ignition switch on the boat..the motor wants to turn over but won't. I want to take my carburetor off but how???

  1. I hope you know that the carburetor has nothing to do with a motor that wont turn over- there are 3 things that can cause this=one- the battery may not be charged - two- the starter may not be engaging- three- the solenoid may need replacing. I am assuming that the motor is not frozen up.

      This is what you need to do first- check out battery and battery connections- this is usually what is wrong about 90% of the time when an outboard motor does not turn over. If this is not the problem, take the cowling off and take the plate that covers the fly wheel off- it will have 3 or 4 bolts holding it in place- when you take this off, you will see where a pull rope can be used on the motor- pump up the gas, turn on the switch and use a pull rope on the motor- if it turns over and starts, you will know it is in the starter. Good luck!

      (be sure and kill it immediately if it starts, unless you have muffs on it)
