  1. hi,

Like many undesirable canine behaviors, destructive habits usually develop because a dog is bored, lonely, or both. It's not fair or realistic to expect your dog--especially a working breed --to spend long hours quietly sitting and waiting for your return. By nature dogs are curious and sentient beings; see that she has enough mental and physical stimulation to minimize the impulse to dig and chew.

here's How to treat the problem:

  3. Crate training!

The safest thing to do would be to crate him/her. If your dog isn't crate trained already, you should definitely give it a shot.

You can either use a wire crate or a hard plastic crate/carrier big enough for your dog to stretch out, stand, and turn around comfortably.

Place the crate in a quiet location (bedroom). Put a soft blanket or bed in the crate along with a favorite chew toy & a treat. It helps to also cover the crate with a blanket, dim the lights in the room, and turn on some soft music... OK that sounds a bit like a date. Seriously though, it works wonders.

For a few minutes a day, place your dog in the crate. It's OK if he/she cries at first. Just don't let the dog out while it's crying. Wait until it's quiet. The more the dog gets used to this routine, the better adjusted he/she will become.

I have 2 dogs in an apartment & both are crate trained. Anytime I leave the apartment, they know they're supposed to go to the crate. It's their chill out place while I'm gone.

It will definitely work wonders for your sanity, knowing that your dog is in a safe place when you're gone & that it won't be destroying your carpet!
