my grandfather was born and raised canadian. this past year he passed away and i now have no direct blood line to a 100% canadian citizen (this excludes aunts, uncles, and cousins which i have a ton of still living there). my father, who is 51 is interested in getting his citizenship for canada as well. we live on the border and it just makes it easier for travel. what steps would we have to go through, or has the window of oppertunity already closed on us????

  1. It depends---was your father born inside or outside of Canada?  If your father was born inside Canada, then he is Canadian.  He can use his Canadian birth certificate to apply for a Certificate of Citizenship.

Please read the guide to see if you have the proper documents to qualify.  Even if your dad was born outside of Canada to a Canadian parent he may still qualify.

As for Canadian citizenship for yourself, your link to qualify would be your father.  So you will have to see if he can qualify or not.  Even if your dad does qualify for Canadian citizenship you still may not qualify as one because if you or your father have never resided in Canada then he can not pass it to you.

There will be new laws regarding citizenship for Canada next April.  If you do not qualify now read the new laws and maybe you can qualify under the new laws.

    Hope this is helpful.

  2. You probably cannot apply for Canadian citizenship.  Your father also cannot apply as he was born outside Canada before Feb 1977 and his birth was not registered.  However, the law will be changing by next April so it is worth inquiring at the nearest Canadian consulate.
