  1. i am just about to take the test my self.

You should start with the no code test. that will get you on some ham band then work for more.

in a few years most test will be no code.

the code is moires code  the old dots and dash system.

If you can listen to CB radio go to the sideband channels 31-40 and just listen. A lot of those guys are ham guys

I currently have a radio that will go 6 bands below and 7 bands above CB radio witch is the 11 meter band.

If you know about radios already you know you can do whats called "shooting skip. when your radio signal bounces off the atmosphere and you can talk far away.

I live near Seattle and have talked all over the world just on these bands..

Try your local community collage or CB radio shop. they might point you in the right direction.

find the FCC web site they will have a listing  for you.

and if you get to the band just below CB look for whisky tango1771.

what part of the country live in.

  3. The links above are a real help.  The test isn't hard at all.  I took the test for the Novice class when I was 11 years old, with morse code when it was still required.  Read the material and I think you will have a shot.  You might need to reread it a couple of times depending how easily you get it (I did five times), but the test is very easy; even more easy without the code requirement.  If you don't pass the first time, try again.  Once you pass the Novice, you can try for the Technician class license and then progress from there.

    Good luck to you

  4. There are a few on line web site that have practice exams. Two of them are

    http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl

    and

    http://www.eham.net/exams/

You may want to get the ARRL book "Now you're Talking".

It is the study guide put out by the ARRL for people wanting to obtain their Technician Class license. You can order the book directly from the ARRL on their web site  http://www.arrl.org

    Good Luck and 73
