How do i get my hard drive to work on my direct tv dvr???

How do i get my hard drive to work on my direct tv dvr??? Do i just plug it in the usb port in th front or back or is there a steps i got to do. do i have to download drivers first to it. Its a 80gig western digital external harddrive.

    The USB port on the back is "for future use" according to Direct TV.
