I have a boy and girl parakeet, each of them about 3 years old, and they have been EXTREMELY bonded for the last 2 years. I have a nesting box in their cage, but for some reason, they just will not mate! It is pretty noisy in the room they are in... and im thinking that might be the reason, but i really want them to have babies! How do i get them to mate?

  1. Well make sure you have a male and a female. A male will have a blue nose (cere) and a female will have a white nose or a brown nose. All you can do is watch to see if they want to mate. Usally it is good to try breeding them in the winter months when they feel they need to be inside the box. From october to march are the best times to breed hook bill birds.

  2. Why do you want them to? Are they from healthy breeder stock and not pet store budgies whose backgrounds and genetic health history you don't know? Do you have a mentor?

Breeding isn't a game. Do you realize how many budgies are in shelters and rescues right now?

  3. Do you cover their cage at night?   Mine mated (even though we didn`t think they would) in the middle of christmas dinner.

  4. well they might do it in the summer times like my parakeets, they mated about twice a week. n breeding parakeets is a lot of responsibilities i mean do u hav enough time to b there fo there needs, also u should get them checked out by a vet first to make sure they're healthy enough n the female has enough calcium to produce eggs otherwise she might b egg bound
