How do i get my phillips dvp 5960 off standby?

i've tried holding down the off/on button, pressed it repeatedly, and it still won't turn off.

  1. Not all modern A/V devices shut off completely. They are either operating or on standby or "sleeping". Hardly any receivers or TV's actually shut off completely any more. Why? sometimes its to make powering up quicker and easier. It keeps power to channel and setting memories on TV's, and may be easier on equipment than powering up from a "cold" state. My Pioneer DVD player shuts off, but my RCA Scenium DVD/DVD-Audio player goes to standby when "turned off". My DENON receiver goes to standby, but also has a separate button to turn it off completely if you're going away for a few days or more. Read the manual for your unit, or if it's not available go online to the company's website where you can sometimes download manuals or ask for information about their products.
