If you want to use one of the cartoon 'avatars' then it's a two step process

1) Create your avatar

You can go here, http://answers.yahoo.com/my/my_edit

And in the "Picture" section, click on the "Edit my Yahoo! avatar" link

Or, you can go here, http://avatars.yahoo.com/

2) Display your avatar on Answers

On the Yahoo!Answers page,

select "My Q&A"

select "Edit My Info"

in the Picture section, select "Use My Yahoo Avatar"

The same link from abobe will get you there, http://answers.yahoo.com/my/my_edit

And, lastly, have a little patience.  It is being reported by some users that the changes do not take effect immediately.  They don't see their avatar in Answers for a day or two.

Good Question!  I had trouble also in the beginning.  If you have already made your Avatar, then you just need to do the "Add To Favorites" from the avatar screen - then it will be there automatically.  However, in messenger you need to go to the preferences and then go to display image and then go to change default image and click your avatar as your default.  If you have not made your Avatar, then go to Yahoo Avatars and make one first then do all that other stuff.  Good Luck!

To add an actual photo you need to first set up Yahoo! 360 account. Then upload a photo in JPeg format, and select it as your main photo. Then return to your Yahoo! Answers 'My Q&A' page, and select edit your profile. The option to chose either your Yahoo! 360 photo, your avatar, or the gray smiley face. Select, save, and your done

Try clicking on edit my info then click on edit yahoo Avatar. Try that. It will convert that smily face big time!

go to your page in "my q&a",

and click [edit my info]...

then choose the option of "use my yahoo! avatar"

you'd have to wait awhile though,

because it takes some time to update...

Sign into your Yahoo! account, then create an avatar clicking on the gray face found on first page. Go to 'Yahoo! answers' (you must be still signed in), click on your nickname, then on 'Edit My Info'. In the 'Picture' section, choose 'Use my Yahoo! Avatar'.
