ok so im wondering how i can improve my striking power. i weightlift 3-4 times a week. i kinda do it powerlifter style

sunday: bench 5x5; deadlift 5x5

tuesday: squat 5x5; calf raises

thursday: shoulders, lats, traps, forearms (not gona list the routines cuz itll take too long)

saturday: abs

will this only get my stronger and not help my speed and power behind my strikes? cuz i lift so that ill be burned out by the 5th set of 5 so i use heavy weights...will this only improve my strength and not my striking power?

  1. liftin is cool but dont do it to much because it will slow your punches and speed makes power

  2. For a powerful strike, you need long and lean muscles.  A fast and accurate strike is a powerful strike.  Big and bulky muscles will only slow down your speed.  Perhaps cut your bodybuilding time down to two days a week.  Upper body and abs on one day, lower body and abs again the next and do only set set of exercises per muscle group.  Before and after your workout, stretch, stretch and stretch again!  It's good to have definition, but if you are looking for a faster strike, make sure your muscles are flexible - even your leg muscles because alot of power in boxing comes from your legs.  Infront of the mirror or on the heavy bag, practise striking fast with good form.  Rotate properly and stay on the balls of your feet.  Be a good distance from the bag.  Upon contact, your arm should be extended and you should remain balanced.  If you keep your muscles flexible and strike with good form, you will develop a very powerful strike.  Best of luck.

  3. punching is like any sport, throwing a javelin, getting a big tennis serve, pitching a ball. While weight training and other exercises can help 10-15% most of the benefit comes from proper technqiue training and real application with a coach.

For example the strongest guy in the world cannot throw a javelin further than a 15 year old javelin athlete,  and he will not get much better, no matter how much weights he does, without coaching.

Punching is no different.A coach will double your punching power within a few short months, just by getting you to move the correct way.

More importantly he will then get you to land it on a moving target.

I would not worry about weights too much until you can do this.

If yu want to do some talk to the coach.

  4. Agree with both.  either decrease the weights or just do resistance strength training.  You might want to look into a gym to be trained on proper execution

  5. exercise and working out will make you stronger of coarse but strength for a punch comes when you execute the punch properly. go to a boxing gym and learn how to pivot your feet and twist your hips and you will be able to punch harder. for the best ideas around for general workouts go to crossfit.com
